Conference on Sustainability and the Welsh Language

The conference held on 22nd February at Bangor University was a resounding success. Organised jointly by Dyfodol and the WISE network at Bangor University the conference brought together over 70 people with an interest in sustainability from the point of view of the environment and the Welsh language.

The two outcomes of the conference were as follows:

1. That as many organisations and individuals as possible take advantage of the opportunity to influence the Welsh Government’s legislative programme through responding, in the first instance, to the consultation on the Sustainable Development Bill and Planning Bill emphasising the need for the Welsh language to be a central part of both bills: The consultation closes on 4th March: http://wales.gov.uk/consultations/sustainabledevelopment/sdwhitepaper/?status=open&lang=en.

2. A statement to be sent to the Welsh Government was agreed:

the wellebing of the Welsh lnaguage is a part of Sustainable Devlopment according to the Welsh Government’s present policies. Dyfodol’s conference on Sustainability and the Welsh language held in Bangor on 22nd Febraury 2013 confirms the opinion that the wellebing and development of the Welsh language should be a core element of Sustainable Development in Wales. Therefore we call on the Welsh Government to ensure that the wellbeing and development of the Welsh language is included ac a core element on the face of the Sustainable Deveoplent Bill and the Planning Bill in due course”
